Basic history of Anglia Yacht Brokerage
Anglia Yacht Brokerage was founded by Ben Sutcliffe now chief organizer for the South Wales Boatshow back in 1991.
Originally based at the mouth of the river Deben (Felixstowe Ferry), we moved to our current larger premises in 1996. This was necessary due to us moving away from general yacht brokerage and expanding/specialising into the Cornish Crabber and Drascombe market. In the previous year we had been appointed Drascombe Distributor for East Anglia by Honnor Marine. We were ‘Drascombe Distributors of the Year’ three years running for 1995, 1996 and 1997 until Honnor Marine went into receivership.
Ben left the company in the spring of 1999. It was that summer that we were appointed for the second time as a Drascombe Distributor by McNultys who had taken on the Drascombe brand. Unfortunately we didn’t see eye to eye with there Sales Director and it wasn't long before we decided to call it a day.
In 2000 we needed a new product to sell so we approached the newly reformed Honnor Marine run by Bob and Norma Brown selling there ‘Original Devon Range’. We had great success for the next five or so years selling their boats and still have a good working relationship selling there parts/accessories today.
After much discussion with colleagues and customers I saw an opportunity for a revised version of the Lugger offering the same traditional looks and qualities with improved sailing performance, easier to sail and rig without the flaws of the original while still incorporating it’s virtues of a safe, stable family day sailor.
Drawing on my experience, comprehensive customer feedback and input from a few local Drascombe sailors I decided to design, build and evolve what has now become the ‘Deben Lugger’.
